The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and SelfCareNet Partner to Develop a Self-Care, Symptom-Based Healthcare Information Content

December 28, 2007 – American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), an international organization of sports medicine physicians, has agreed to peer-review SelfCareNet, Inc.’s new sports medicine content.  SelfCareNet (SCN) is a leading provider of pre-visit, symptom-based, self-care health information. Christopher Madden, M.D., board-certified in family and sports medicine, authored the content.

“I wanted to be involved authoring the SCN sports information because the demand for pre-visit sports information is growing,” said Dr. Madden. “My patients want to have access to credible information 24/7 to help answer questions such as ‘Should I call my physician?’ or ‘What can I do for home care?’ or ‘What is a credible Web site that I can visit for more information?’  Based on my experience, the SCN sports information will meet a growing demand for sports related information.”

The SCN sports information will be made available to patients, constituents, members and employees through office-based physicians, hospitals, managed care organizations and employers to help them make decisions about sports-related injuries and symptoms.  The sports symptom/injury-based information will address real life scenarios such as:

  • My son was playing football and sustained a concussion? What symptoms do I need to watch for? When should I take him to the doctor? When can he play again?
  • I just injured my back lifting a heavy object. I have pain going down my right leg? What can I do to feel better? When should I call my doctor?
  • My knee began to hurt over the kneecap after running. What may be causing my pain? How can I treat it? Is it safe to exercise again and when? What exercises can I do to get better?

“The SelfCareNet information is well suited for giving lay people access to-easy-to- understand, easy-to-use information that will help answer their sports-related health questions,” said Richard Thompson, SelfCareNet’s CEO.  “An important part of the company’s formula for credibility is to have the information authored by a physician and peer-reviewed.  The AMSSM is well known in the industry for its credibility, innovation and excellence, and we are happy they will peer-review the information.”

“AMSSM is pleased to be able to assist in providing high-quality patient information to its members and their patients” said Craig Young, M.D., Immediate President AMSSM.

About The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is a multi-disciplinary organization of physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, collaboration and fellowship within the field of Sports Medicine. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of over 1,300 sports medicine physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.

The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with fellowship training and added qualification in Sports Medicine who then combine their practice of Sports Medicine with their primary specialty, but the AMSSM also includes members who specialize solely in non-surgical sports medicine, serve as full-time team physicians, or specialize in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. By nature of their training and experience, sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams, or active individuals who are simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

MEDSEEK, SelfCareNet, & Primetime Medical Partner to Deliver Integrated Consumer-Centric Solution

User-friendly decision-support tools facilitate information exchange between patients and physicians, saving time and enhancing care

SelfCareNet, a leading provider of physician-authored, peer-reviewed "pre-visit decision support information", MEDSEEK, the recognized leader in enterprise eHealth portals, and Primetime Medical, a provider of patient interviewing technology, today announced a strategic partnership to provide consumers access to pre-visit information, empowering them to make better decisions about their health. With this new solution, SelfCareNet's web-based decision support information has been enhanced with Primetime’s Instant Medical History questionnaires.

Patients and parents often don't know when they should call their physician's office or a hospital's nurse call center, schedule an appointment or rely on an e-Visit with a physician. SelfCareNet information helps the patient decide, based on their symptoms, the best course of action. There are as many as five decision points for each medical problem based on an individual's circumstances. When a patient needs to see a physician, each appropriate decision point is linked to an Instant Medical History questionnaire.

MEDSEEK will sell the SelfCareNavigator information products to hospitals and health systems. SelfCareNavigator can be implemented within MEDSEEK's consumer and patient portals. SelfCareNavigator can also be integrated with Primetime Medical Software's Instant Medical History to promote eVisit adoption.

By providing pre-visit guidance to patients and their families, SelfCareNavigator drives traffic to a hospital's consumer and patient portals; reduces calls into the call center or physician offices; increases patient satisfaction; promotes eVisits and online appointment request functionality; and increases web-based physician referrals.

SelfCareNet and Primetime Medical Software form Partnership to Increase Productivity and Improve Communications for Healthcare Providers and Patients

SelfCareNet, a leading provider of consumer-oriented, physician-authored, pre-visit health information, and Primetime Medical Software, developer of the innovative Instant Medical History, today announced a partnership in which the organizations will collaborate to bring next-generation consumer-orientated health content and services to the market.

Instant Medical History interviews patients on-line to begin gathering important subjective history prior to the encounter with their physician. Branching logic enables patients to progress quickly through adjustable questionnaires from an extensive medical knowledgebase. Sophisticated technology enables this information to transfer to the provider’s EMR. This has proven to save the physician time and enhance the quality of the encounter.

"The ability to integrate Instant Medical History to SelfCareNet’s symptom topics adds an additional dimension of personalized patient information for providers and is a critical part of our strategy to become the premier provider of consumer-related information, said Rick Thompson, president of SelfCareNet. "And that’s why we are excited to join forces with Primetime Medical Software."

"In particular, the impressive track-record and experience of Primetime Medical Software’s founders, Dr. Allen Wenner and Matthew Ferrante, and their innovative approach of Instant Medical History lend themselves exactly to the value added opportunities we wish to pursue," Thompson said.

"Gathering symptom specific medical history before the encounter provides the physician with an innovative solution to better meet the needs of their patients’ especially with today’s time challenges. SelfCareNet provides the sort of innovative symptom-related and disease-related information that will complement our initiatives. The integration of the two products will enable clinics to empower more patients," said Allen Wenner, MD, Vice President, Primetime Medical Software.

The integration of SelfCareNet and IMH will save the physician time, generate revenue, and increase patient satisfaction. Rather than the patient or parent calling the physician’s office because of a symptom or injury and waiting to talk with a nurse, that patient can access the SelfCareNet symptom-based information, confirm their symptom as well as answer the IMH questions relating to that symptom. The physician would generate revenue either through an evaluation for non-visit care via CPT 0074T or via a patient visit. To view an example topic, Hives, go to the following URL:

The patient will find both pre-visit symptom-based information (SelfCareNet) as well as the IMH questions related to the symptom.
